Join the Movember challenge

Movember, also known as “No-Shave November,” is a month dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health issues.  It’s that time of the year when many men around the world put away their razors and let their facial hair flourish in support of a noble cause.

The Movember Movement is a global movement that originated in Australia in 2003 and has since gained momentum worldwide.  The name “Movember” is a combination of “mustache” and “November.”  Participants, often called “Mo Bros,” grow mustaches during the month of November to start conversations about men’s health, with a particular focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Raising Awareness

The primary goal of Movember is to raise awareness about these crucial men’s health issues.  Men tend to avoid talking about their health problems, but Movember encourages them to open up and discuss their concerns.  By growing a mustache, Mo Bros become walking, talking billboards, prompting discussions, and promoting awareness within their communities.

Supporting Research and Programs

Movember isn’t just about growing facial hair, it’s also about raising funds for research and programs that address men’s health.  The funds collected during Movember go towards supporting organizations that work tirelessly to prevent and treat prostate and testicular cancer, improve mental health, and reduce the number of male suicides.  These initiatives have a significant impact on the lives of countless men and their families.

Raise Funds

Create a Movember fundraising page and share it with your friends, family, and colleagues. Encourage them to donate to this important cause.

Spread the word

Use social media to share information about Movember, its goals, and the issues it addresses. The more people know about it, the more significant the impact.

Get regular checkups

In addition to growing your mustache, make sure to take care of your own health. Regular checkups can help detect issues early and ensure you’re in the best possible shape.

Movember is more than just a fun excuse to grow a mustache, it’s a movement with a meaningful purpose.  By participating in Movember, you can contribute to raising awareness, funds, and support for critical men’s health issues.  So, this November, let your mustache do the talking and join the ranks of Mo Brothers worldwide who are making a real difference in the lives of men and their families.  Together, we can change the face of men’s health.

We will also be announcing our Movember competition winner on 1 December 2023 so please keep an eye on our social media pages.

Monique is our member of the month

Congratulations to Monique Melck who has been nominated and voted for by our members as our October Member of the Month winner.

Let’s hear from Monique:

“Back in 2017, I was a typical teenage girl, obsessed with being model-skinny.  Sad motivation, right?  Luckily my mindset shifted.  I am no longer trying to shrink myself.  Instead, I aim to be strong and confident.  Seeing the number on the scale go up makes me happy.  Motivation comes and goes but discipline is a commitment.

“My favourite muscle groups to train are everything, really.  I don’t like the feeling of training quads, but it has to be done!”

Monique’s advice for people starting their health and fitness journey is:
“Keep showing up and eventually you will be confident.  Nutrition is the most important part.  Educate yourself.  Learn from those with experience.”

Keep a close eye on our social media pages as voting for the next round of member of the month will commence soon.

Maties Gym has two iron women

Maties Gym gives a huge congratulations to our Personal Trainers, Bernette and Landi, who finished the Half Iron Man that took place in Mossel Bay over the weekend of the 18 and 19 November.

Let’s hear from Bernette:

“It might have been a solo race, but doing it together made the experience and the day a memory I will cherish it forever.”
“With Landi, who has no race experience and no sport background before three years ago, and this being her first event in any sport, and then taking on the Half Ironman, I couldn’t miss out in sharing this beautiful memory with her.  The swim we both panicked, the bicycle we were on fire and the run we don’t talk about, just a distant memory we don’t bring up 😊 Happy tears over the finish line!”

Congratulations ladies, we are super proud of you.

Tips and tricks:

The impact of caffeine on workouts

Caffeine is a natural stimulant with several benefits when consumed before a workout. Here are some of the potential benefits of combining caffeine with exercise:

Increased alertness and focus: Caffeine can help improve mental alertness and concentration, which can benefit a focused and effective workout. It works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain, leading to increased levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Enhanced physical performance: Caffeine has been shown to enhance physical performance by increasing the release of adrenaline. This can result in improved strength, endurance, and overall exercise performance.

Fat burning: Caffeine can boost metabolism and increase the oxidation of fatty acids. This means that your body may use fat as a fuel source more efficiently during exercise, potentially contributing to fat loss.

Delayed muscle fatigue: Caffeine may help delay the onset of muscle fatigue during prolonged or high-intensity exercise. By affecting the central nervous system, caffeine can reduce the perception of effort, allowing you to push harder for longer.
Improved circulation: Caffeine can stimulate the release of nitric oxide, a compound that helps dilate blood vessels. This can lead to improved blood flow, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to working muscles, which is crucial for optimal performance.
Better endurance: Caffeine has been shown to enhance endurance performance by increasing the availability of free fatty acids, which can serve as an additional energy source during prolonged exercise.
