Find the balance

Dear Maties Gym member

October has arrived, and as the weather is slowly getting warmer, our gym is heating up with exciting updates, events, and tips to keep you motivated and active. The end of October also marks the end of the fourth term at the University, and we wish all our student members the very best for the upcoming exams. It has been a long year, and we encourage you to push through to the end and finish the year on a high. Regular exercise keeps a healthy mind and relieves mental stress, and we encourage everyone to find a balance between regular gym visits and studying for the end-of-year exams.

Maties gym facilities update and reminders:

Maties Gym is going cashless

From 1 January 2024, Maties Gym is saying goodbye to paper bills and coins as we move towards a more convenient and secure way of managing our finances. In 2024, we will no longer accept cash as a payment method for your gym membership. However, we will accept various alternative payment options such as instant EFTs, credit- and debit cards, SnapScan, and debit orders.

Be on the lookout for our new membership and access control tablets that will go live towards the end of the year.  Members can manage their entire membership online, from registering and renewing their memberships to changing bank details, uploading supporting documents to freezing their memberships according to the current business rules.

No more ice baths

After careful consideration, we unfortunately had to close our ice baths. But do not dispair, as we still have many more great offerings in the facility to ensure you stay on track in your health and fitness journey. Also, note that sleep and nutrition are still the best forms of recovery, and that is something that you as a member have direct control of. You can also contact the team at EPT Recovery for more information on recovery techniques at www.eptrecovery.com

Ladies changeroom refurb

We have started the refurbishment of our ladies’ changeroom and the completion date is scheduled for 31 January 2024.  During the refurbishment project, please make use of the Sports Science changing rooms on the ground level next to the outdoor pool, which remains fully operational.  We thank you for your patience during this time and the wait will be well worth it.

Breast Cancer awareness month

Head to our website and read our Breast Cancer Awareness blog. Here you will find valuable information about breast cancer, risk factors, early detection, and how a healthy lifestyle can play a role in reducing risk. Together, we can raise awareness, improve prevention, and contribute to finding a cure for breast cancer. Your voice, your knowledge, and your actions matter in this journey toward a world free from breast cancer.

Tips and tricks:
Drinking water is good for you

Drinking water is essential for good health because our bodies are made up of about 60% water, and every system in our body depends on it to function properly. Here are several reasons why drinking water is good for you:

Hydration: Staying properly hydrated helps prevent dehydration, which can lead to symptoms such as dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion.

Weight management: Drinking water before meals can help reduce calorie intake by promoting a feeling of fullness, aiding weight management.

Reduces the risk of kidney stones: Drinking enough water can help dilute and prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Prevents headaches: Dehydration can lead to headaches and migraines. Drinking water can alleviate or prevent them in some cases.

Skin and joint health: Adequate hydration can help maintain skin elasticity and keep it looking healthy.

It’s important to note that individual water needs can vary based on factors like age, gender, activity level, and climate. However, a general guideline is to drink at least eight eight glasses of water a day although some people may need more or less depending on their specific circumstances. Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and well-being
