What’s hot in group exercise?
Introducing Aerial Yoga

There’s something both beautiful and transformative about hanging from the sky, nestled in silk.  Like a butterfly emerging from your cocoon.  Enter aerial yoga. Aerial Yoga combines traditional Asana (the physical postures of yoga) and yoga philosophies with the aerial arts.  Silk fabrics and or ropes are hung from above to aid practitioners in forming shapes. You can be fully supported by the silks – even lying down entirely, like a hammock, or wrap the silks around particular body parts, keeping other parts on the floor. Hanging fully or suspending individual body parts is believed to create traction and open your body more gently and intuitively than when you’re on the floor.  The silks and ropes can also be helpful for balance.

There are many benefits of aerial yoga, namely:

  • Improved flexibility, stability and balance
  • Traction and joint decompression
  • Reduced risk factors for heart disease
  • Improved mental health

Keep a close eye on our timetable to ensure you don’t miss the launch of this fantastic programme. There will be limited slots available, so booking is essential.

We’ve added a new Les Mills class

In case you missed it, we have added a new Les Mills class to the timetable, called Body Balance. If you missed the first class, take some time to take a look at the timetable for the next one and come and see what the fuss is all about.

Body Balance combines Yoga and Pilates principles to give you the best strength and flexibility experience. Set to unconventional music, Body Balance will leave you refreshed and relaxed. You have a choice between a 30-minute and 45-minute option, so make sure to check the timetable for which one is being presented. Moreover, we are soon going to be adding two more Les Mills classes – RPM and Body Combat. Keep an eye on our social media pages for more information about what you can expect from these two new classes.

We have some big news: Maties Gym will be hosting a Les Mills Day, on which there will be only Les Mills classes presented for the day in August. This will be an open day too, so bring all your friends and come and enjoy the day with us and Les Mills. You’ll have the chance to try out all the different classes we offer! We will also be announcing something big to come in partnership with Les Mills, so if you want to be a part of something big and exciting, then don’t miss out on the Les Mills Day.

Under construction news

Construction work on the men’s change room is expected to come to an end on 15 August 2023.  Unfortunately, the sauna will remain closed until further notice as we need to completely refurbish it. SU Facilities Management is currently in the process of handling the full refurbishment, and as soon as we have a date when the sauna reopens, we will communicate that on all of our platforms.

If the space is a bit limited in the change rooms, members can continue to make use of the Sports Science changing rooms on the ground level next to the outdoor pool, which remains fully operational.  We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.

Maties Gymnasium has been nominated as a finalist in the Best Place to Sweat category of the Kfm Best of the Cape Awards for 2023.  We could not be more honoured and prouder for this nomination, so please give us your vote.  More details are available on the Kfm website, Facebook and Instagram pages on kfm 94.5 and @kfmza.

Vote for us please by entering the link here, and you could stand a chance to win a share of R10 000 cash.

News from Tygerberg Gymnasium

We are thrilled to announce that our dedicated contractors are hard at work installing trunking for Wi-Fi connectivity, bringing Eduroam’s reach into the gymnasium. This upgrade promises to significantly boost internet access and connectivity throughout the entire facility.

While we understand that this improvement may cause temporary inconveniences within the gym, we sincerely apologise for any disruptions it may cause. Rest assured, we are doing everything possible to minimize the impact during the installation process.
We are also delighted to bring back our beloved campus runs on Thursdays, which started on 3 August 2023. Join us outside the gym as we run a refreshing 5 km loop around campus. This event is open to all, whether you’re a member or a non-member. For more information, feel free to inquire at the reception.

Thank you for your patience and continued support as we strive to enhance your experience at our facility. We look forward to offering you an even better environment for fitness and connectivity.

Until next time, stay warm and safe, and we’re looking forward to seeing you in our facility crushing those goals one day at a time!
